Be Unique in Uniform!

So against my will, I’m enrolled in Food Production and Operations. I hate to cook and I asked my advisor if I could pay extra to not take this class, but it’s apparently part of the core curriculum. Whats worse is that we a required to wear a uniform…full chef attire. I have no problem wearing uniforms…I mean I used to dream of going to private school and dressing in a Blair Waldorf inspired  ensemble…but a long sleeve chef coat and chef pants…that does not sound hot!
So the rules for the uniform is black or white chef coat, matching chef hat, black pants, and restaurant shoes. I had to get totally creative!
This was how my chef coat looked originally.

These were the shoes we were recommended to buy.And I’m not even going to show the awful loose cargo-ish pants that they suggested I wear.
I, of course put my own Barbie spin on the outfit.
1. I took off the black buttons and added pink ones.
2. I got my name monogrammed in pink.
3. I find the tightest black “slacks”  I could find…(these are actually maternity pants from Target…comfy!)
4. I went to Payless and go these non-slip Mary Jane shoes. Not the cutest things…but wayyyyy better than those boats above!

And of course my knives had to be cute!
Yes, $6.99 at Ross! Who said I had to spend 40 dollars a knife at the Restaurant Supply store? These are cute and food safe!!So,  sometimes you can’t take your uniform to the extreme like I did.
But here are some tips on looking unique while wearing a uniform:
1. Wearing statement jewelry or bold colored jewels is a perfectly simple way to maintain individualism while still being in “dress code”.2. Opt for unique accessories and supplies. Just like I purchased these pink knives, look for cute pencils rulers, accessory bags, etc to stand out from the crowd.
3.Unique hair styles. I happen to be the only black girl in my cooking class. Everyone is obsessed with my braids! lol
4. Alter it. If possible, alter your uniform a little. I added buttons, but maybe you can shorten the hemline, lengthen it, add embellishments, or add some kind of other conversation starter.

Have you ever worn a uniform? What did you do to stand out from the crowd?

  1. I love how you put the spin on your food service uniform, Taylor. The pink buttons and the embroidery on your jacket really do add a personal touch to your look. And I would have never thought to purchase pink knives! Now that’s true barbie style lol.

  2. When I was a waitress I took the pockets off my apron and replaced it with Alexander Henry Tattoo fabric (google it!) I loved it and got a ton of compliments.

maternity pants, mary jane shoes?? who would have thought? Taylor Brione, that’s who!!
