Yesterday, I attended the monthly National Association of Catering Executives meeting. Generally, our meetings are at night, but we switched up and had a lunch meeting.
I’m social chair of our student chapter of NACE at UH, so I’m pretty involved. When I first got there, I was kind of looking for some of the other students, and there was only one other student there! I’m not a shy person, but it’s more comfortable for me to have another student or two with me when networking.
Of course that didn’t stop me, I went around and said hello to some of the professional members that I know and quickly made my way around the room to connect with others. In event planning and catering its all about relationships and who you know!

At every meeting we generally have a program or speaker and this month we had a body language expert! She was great! She taught us how to spot a liar and gave us some good handshake tips! Word of advice: Don’t touch your face with your left hand when speaking to someone! Her name is Jan Hargrave and she was fabulous! I will definitely be reading some of her books on body language. I’m really interested.
We had a fabulous lunch! Everything was super delicious!
Overall, I had a great time at the meeting, besides for the terrible weather! I really learned a lot and I enjoyed speaking with some other event and catering professionals. I really love goi8ng to NACE and ISES (International Special Events Society) because they are always decorated so pretty!
Remember: Network builds Net worth!
