Love it or not, short season is upon us!  Shorts can be considered one of the most versatile pieces that a fashionista can own.  You can dress them up with a sheer top and haute pair of pumps for date night, or dress them down with a tunic and pair of gladiator sandals for a day of shopping/errands.

Often times, shorts are considered the “stepchild” for all the wrong reasons.  Some of the most common reasons for not being able to wear shorts are:

  • Comfort – If you find yourself uncomfortable in a pair of shorts, dig deeper to get to the reason behind your feelings.  Is it because you are a bit self conscious about a certain part of your body?  If this is the case, finding the right fit may be the answer to your prayers!

  • Length – It is important to match your short length to your body.  You don’t want to wear shorts that are too short/long, as this can cause you to look taller/shorter.  You may also end up getting unwanted attention…and we as women all know that’s not the type of attention that we want to attract!

  • Fit – Re-evaluate your body type, as our bodies tend to change over time.  Be honest with yourself about the changes that have taken place, and use it to your advantage!

Here are a few tips to help you find the right shorts for your body type.

Shorts for Athletic or Curvy

Athletic Build: Add curves by wearing a short that has a gathering of material such as rouching or pleats.  If you’re really tall or don’t like to show a lot of leg, go for a pair of bermudas to even you out.  Show your sassy side by wearing shorts above the knee if you don’t mind showing off.  A nice feminine top and wedges will help balance out your look.

Full & Curvy: You’ll want to avoid pleats and rouching if you have a curvier build.  Pockets are also a big no, as they add bulk to your hips!  Go for flat fronts with a wider leg to balance you out.  The wide leg will pull the focus away from your hips.  Opt for shorts that sit right below the waistline if you have a full midsection.  This will help minimize the dreaded muffin top or gut bulge that we all love to hate.  You can pull off a casual, yet chic look by pairing your shorts with a nice feminine top and a comfortable pair of oxfords.

Short Options - Long/Short Torso

Long Torso: Go for the high waist, shorter length shorts if you have a long torso.  The short length will create the illusion of a longer leg which creates a nice balance.  A longer length can also be worn if you prefer.  The key is to create the illusion of a shorter torso, which is achieved by wearing a higher waist.  Adding a nice peplum and a statement pair of pumps will really make your look stand out!

Short Torso: If you have a shorter torso, you’ll want to wear a bermuda with a lower rise.  The longer length of the bermuda will help balance the lower half of your body.  Pairing them with a long tunic will help to create the illusion of a more proportioned torso.  Adding pops of color will help create a fun look that is sure to add interest to your look.

Pairing these techniques according to your body type will start you on your journey to loving shorts!  Keep in mind that every body is different, and what works for you may not work for the next.

Most importantly, be honest with yourself as you attempt to match up your body types, and be sure to have fun doing so!

Love & Blessings!
